What do you do

if you see someone giving away a seat that's probably expired? Just saw a post on our local Earthcycle (freecycle) offering an infant seat from 2001. Don't know what make but odds are it's probably expired or very nearly.

If I had a car to pick it up (& weren't in the middle of a move) I'd offer to take it myself. Should I try emailing her to let her know/ask if it's expired (assuming she hasn't given it to someone already)?

Well I tried and tried on my city freecycle group (Houston) to get them to make rules about expired seats and all it got me was kicked off the group! I emailed the people that posted as well but never got a response. You can try but not sure if anything will be done.
I own our local freerecycle group in which we have rules about seats (no expired seats) but we do allow unexpired accident free seats.

I would probably email the owner and say something like "That is so nice of you to try to help out moms who can't afford a seat, but unfortunately since it is from 2001 it is expired so they can't use it :( What a bummer!" So you don't get her back up or something? Worth a shot.

I email if I can't (or don't want) to pick up. So far, no one that has offered these seats on my freecycle cares a bit about expiration dates. They don't want to add to the trash or want to help some poor person out. Emailing is better than nothing.

I have been told the fire department uses them to practice extrications. I try to suggest they donate them there. At least that way, they don't feel like they are adding to the landfill or wasting a 'good' seat.
