WWYD: Car backed into... replace seats? / was Re: Crashed Carseat Replacement and Insurance

Just thought I'd add that Chicco has the "should be replaced after any collision" policy, same as Graco. I don't have the link... but had to look it up earlier after I got backed into with the Keyfit in my car... boo!

Does anyone know how they are about crash replacement? I'm afraid I'm going to have a fight on my hands with insurance because it was a low impact crash.

WWYD: Car backed into... replace seats?

So I was parked outside of the house I was babysitting at today and got a knock on my door from the neighbor saying she had backed into my car (apparently she also has hit their other babysitter's car... but that's a whole different issue lol). Obviously, my car was not moving, and she was going at normal backing out speed. She did put a good size dent in the front drivers side panel of my car (missed the headlight though!). It didn't do any damage to her car... so I'm thinking something about the angle she hit me did more damage to mine, not the speed or anything.

Anyways... I had the Keyfit base (the seat was in the house) and a Cosco LBB (buckled in, but belt wasn't locked so it had room to move) in the car when this happened. I'm aware that both seats technically say "replace after any collision"... but this incident also meets the NHSTA guidelines for a minor crash. So I guess my question is what would you do, would you replace them or no?

Will insurance replace them even for such a low impact accident? I'm in MI if that makes a difference on the insurance front.

Sorry this is so long! Thanks for all your help!

Eh, I don't even think I'd call that a crash. I, personally, would continue using the seats with no worries.

That sounds more like a bump, not a crash. If it were me, I would continue using the seats.

:yeahthat:

You'll put more strain on your seats going over a speed bump :twocents:

Thanks everyone! That's what I was thinking... but the wording in the Keyfit manual got me all freaked out :) I appreciate the input!

My husband backed into my car last summer, and we didn't replace the car seats, a SafeSeat and a Marathon. The only damage was a dented door.

I was backed into at a drive thru a few weeks ago. He cracked my front bumper because he had a trailer hitch on his truck. If he didn't have that stupid hitch there would've been no damage to my van. Way to look in your rear view mirror bucko!

Anywho, I chose not to worry about my seats, as others said, I hit speedbumps harder. LOL...
