Ok so we say it's not good to store an unused car seat in a hot attic, right? As it would speed up the deterioration process or something like that.
So, tell me then, how is being stored in an attic much different than being in a car on a 100* day?
Repeated exposure to those high temps throughout a summer. That's gotta cause some damage too then, no?

Just something that came about one day as dh and I were talking.

I don't think it matters much, honestly. Though, my mom stored huge boxes on my cosco seat in her shed in Hawaii and I would swear the seat was a little warped looking after that...
Britax and now Graco both claim (and I've SEEN Britax doing it) that they bake and freeze and retest their seats and there's no problems with them.

Bake and freeze? Seriously?
Wow! That's rash! I'll have to pass that tidbit along to dh. Thanks ;)

So..was there a time that manner of storage mattered? As in, today's materials can better withstand today's pressures. Or is it just that 'we' have since realized it doesn't really matter whereas before, perhaps the materials were the 'same' there was just a worry/caution that handling in such ways could speed up deterioration.

(did I make any sense?)

Oooh yeah, good point...I wish I had a dime for every "eeew, I stored my snugride in a plastic bag, now it's Moldy!" posts....(yummy mildew acid eating your harness straps... )

I dunno whether we know more about plastics or plastics are better now... tis the great mystery of the day... :D

So what would be a good way to store an unused seat?
So it doesn't get the moldy issue. Cardboard box? My old faithful rubbermaid 'tubs'?
I keep my stuff in dry areas..no dampness in attic or basement. But otherwise, how best to store and further prevent the mold issue ??

A cardboard box sounds like a good idea as the box can/will absorb moisture. That is how they are packaged and I have yet to open a CSS box that contained a desiccant pack inside the box. I guess that the box alone does a pretty good job. If you stored the CSS in a box with a desiccant pack then you should be good for sure! :D

I don't know. Take the harness and cover off and store them somewhere that is more dry? (When I have to store two parts of the same item in seperate places I tape notes to each part of the item, detailing where I've stuck the other bits.)
