DC crotch strap?

It seems like the DC doesn't have that much more crotch room then the BV/MA even on the 2nd slot. Anyone with first hand experience with this.

I'm contemplating getting a RA for my DS (instead of the BV) and then a Regent when we turn him forward but I'm concerned of a few things:
1. he would outgrow the RA refacing by height before weight - he is already 27 inches at 5 1/2 months and when we put him in the RA there was only like 3 maybe 4 inches above his head and I will keep him refacing until 33 pounds so maybe the BV is the way to go
2. I like the idea of the TSIP on the BV because DS is our first and in the center but when we have another he will go outboard and right now one of our cars doesn't have side curtain airbags.
3. It seems that the crotch strap on the BV is close to curving up around him (does that make sense). The tech had said this happens to almost all of the kids she sees in this seat but I just wanted to ask your guys opinion.

Oh and one more thing in any refacing seat - infant or convertable- once my DS head is 1 inch from the top he is too tall, right?

Thanks,
Steph

I've heard conflicting numbers for the crotch strap positions in the Decathlon v. the Blvd. or Marathon but the difference, if any, seems to be very small.

It's not uncommon for kids to outgrow the RA by height before they reach the rear facing height limit which is generally top of the head even with the top of the seat's shell for Britax convertible seats. The 1" rule applies mainly to infant seats or other rear facing seats with the 1" rule specified in their manuals.

It's extremely rare for a child to outgrow a Blvd/Marathon/Decathlon by height rear facing. My long torsoed older DD could fit rear facing in a MA until she was 33 lbs. around her third birthday, but she was too tall for a RA (RF or FF) by age 2ish when she only weighed about 28 lbs. DD could use the MA forward facing until about 3 months ago at age 4.5 and in hindsight I really wished I'd been able to get her a Marathon in the first place. And if you can swing the cost, the Blvd's extra TSIP is a big safety perk IMHO, especially for outboard seats or cars without curtain airbags.

We currently have our 2 year old dd in a Roundabout and our 4 year old ds in a Marathon and we are having a problem with the crotch snap being tight on the Marathon. The Roundabout's crotch snap is located about 1 1/2 inches further out than the Marathon which would give a little more room. We are shopping for a car seat right now because of this problem and if I had it to do all over again I would probably buy the Decathalon. It has 3 crotch snap adjustments (although the first would be too small for most children except for an infant). I don't know if this is correct but the lady at USA Baby said the the Decathalon was basically the same shell as the Marathon with extra cushioning and the extra crotch adjustments. My ds is right around 30 lbs and 39 1/4 inches tall and still has one more harness slot to grow into but because of the crotch snap we are having to graduate him to the regent until we feel that he/we are ready for him to be in a booster.
