Disney Offer for Military & their Families

1/8/2009 - WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- A Disney vacation just got more affordable for military members and their families.

With the "Disney's Armed Forces Salute" offer, active and retired military personnel, including active members of the Coast Guard and activated members of the National Guard or Reserve, can enjoy complimentary, multiday admission into Disney's U.S. theme parks, and additional special ticket offers for family members and friends.

At the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, from Jan. 4 to Dec. 23 each active or retired member of the U.S. military may obtain one free five-day "Disney's Armed Forces Salute" ticket with "Park Hopper" and water park options. The ticket is valid for five days of admission into the four Walt Disney World theme parks, plus a total of five visits to a choice of a Disney water park, DisneyQuest Indoor Interactive Theme Park or certain other attractions.

During this offer period, active or retired U.S. military personnel also may make a one-time purchase up to five "Disney's Armed Forces Salute Companion" tickets -- good for five days -- for $99 each, plus tax, for family members or friends. Although this ticket for family members and friends does not include either the Park Hopper or Water Park Fun and More options, it can be upgraded to add either such option, or both, for an additional $25, plus tax, per option. All tickets and options are nontransferable and must be used by Dec. 23.

A similar offer is in place at Walt Disney Land in California. More information is available at installation ITT/ITR offices.

"For so many of the men and women who serve in our U.S. military, time together with their families is cause enough for celebration," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "We are grateful for their service and hope 'Disney's Armed Forces Salute' will allow our troops to create wonderful, magical memories with their family and friends."

Shades of Green, a resort hotel on Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla., is open exclusively to servicemembers, retirees, defense civilians, and their families. It is a safe haven for military families whether they're reintegrating after an overseas deployment, having one last "family fling" before mom or dad deploys, or simply getting away for a weekend.

The resort manager, Brian Japak, is a retired Soldier, and his son has survived two roadside-bomb attacks while serving in Iraq.

"I have great empathy for the families who we serve here," he said.

Mr. Japak said the staff makes every effort to ensure the guests are pampered Disney style -- with just a touch of "home" through the tax-free Army and Air Force Exchange Service shoppette and a Mickey Mouse statue decked out in red, white and blue. Security at the hotel complies with standard base force protection regulations, ensuring the troops and families can sleep soundly and not worry about their personal safety.

Shades of Green is an Armed Forces Recreation Center hotel run by the Army's Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command based in Alexandria, Va. The command's mission is to provide military members and their families with the same quality of life they are sworn to protect. Rates are set on a sliding scale, based on rank, and with no shareholders to answer to or profits to be made, the rates are kept low.

AFRCs offer four other world-class destinations for families, including Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch, Germany, Dragon Hill Lodge in Seoul, South Korea, the Hale Koa Hotel in Honolulu, and the Cape Henry Inn and Beach Club at Fort Storey, Va.

If you purchase the tickets through your Base or Post Ticket & Tours office, there is no added tax to the price.

Anheuser-Busch has something similar for its theme parks through its Salute to heroes program. Military members and up to 3 or 4 family members can have a one day free entry pass to any of the parks per calendar year.

I wish my dad was still alive! He was in WW2. We are going to Disneyland next month, when we go visit my Aunt for her 90th b-day. I was just researching the cheapest way to get us in for 2 days. So far, $141.

Did he retire from the military? Otherwise, I hate to say it, but as 'just' a vet, he wouldn't be eligible. Perhaps he'd qualify under a different program though. You never know. :shrug-shoulders:

I wouldn't mind visiting Disneyworld again, but only if it were free. :p I was there in the late 80s. The idea of all those people with no such thing as a truly off-season terrifies me. Disneyland Paris is much more intimate & friendlier for being smaller. The cooler climes are nicer, imo. Whenever we've gone, it's in June or Sept, so no major lines and very relaxed.

I can't help it. When we go on vacation, I want to get away from people, not be contained within the masses.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but Sea World also offers an awesome military deal.

All military members and up to three dependents get into Sea World, Busch Gardens, or Sesame Place for FREE this year. http://herosalute.com/

Both this and the Disney World discounts are awesome deals

Here's a little more info on eligibility:

Any active duty, activated or drilling reservist, or National Guardsman is entitled to free admission under the Here's to the Heroes program. He or she need only register, either by clicking here and submitting his or her information or in the entrance plaza of participating parks, and show a Department of Defense photo ID. As many as three direct dependents of military personnel also are entitled to free admission. Dependents may take advantage of the offer without their service member, though an adult must accompany minor dependents, and dependent ages 10 and over must present valid dependent I.D.

No hijacking at all, but see the last paragraph of my original post. ;) I didn't go into detail, just provided the link.:D
It's a program that's been around a few years. We've taken advantage of it each year since 2003. Unfortunately, Sesame Place doesn't open up until May, so we can't go when we visit the inlaws. :crying:

So do I  DH wrote to Anheuser-Busch & thanked them. If it wasn't for this program, there would be no way we could have afforded t he single day spent at Busch Gardens Williamsburg in Sept 2007. IIRC, $145 for the three of us
There's no way to have that much fun within the hours of 10-5 for one single day to justify severely damaging our budget once parking, food, & souveniers are factored in. We took turns on rides since dd was much to young to go -- time consuming.

Anyway, my recommendation for any military family (ret. & active) to stay at Naval Annex Cheatham for very cheap. It's just off the National Parkway. Minutes to Williamsburg, 20 to Jamestown, & 10 to Yorktown. Family TLF was able to be reserved 30 days out. A great place to eat near by is Chickahominy House for breakfast and Lunch. I saw it as I made a left at the light towards Jamestown. One of those quick maneuvers into the parking lot, leaving dh gasping & dd giggling.

They don't bump you unless someone of higher rank needs the space on official orders. And it was about $35 per night for Bedroom, living/dining area, kitchenette, & bathroom. Yeah, there was some musty damp odors -- old building near t he water -- but we stayed there 4 nights for just over the equivalent of one night at nearby hotels.

Purchase Governor's Key Tickets to Williamsburg at your military ticket facility and you save $$$$ The two day pass costs less than a regular one day pass. There's discounts on many things including the coach rides. I guess they figure you're serving t he country, why not educate why it's important? ;)

You are right, not retired from. That always gets me. If you were in someone called World War Two, (like my dad and grandmother both were), you should get some perks. He couldn't even get USAA insurance. I have it, but he couldn't.

yeah disneyworld sucks no matter how you cut it. but disney land is awesome and has a decent off-season crowd...not too busy at all. if they were offering such a deal i'd try to score some passes but now that i think about it, i'm not sure my dad retired or not...he may have just served several terms. hmm?
