Can my Daughter Ride in the Front Seat

Lately my daughter Emily age 11, 4'2 65lbs. has been begging me to let her ride in the front seat of my van whenever we are walking to the car. At this point I have not allowed it. She has a Husky in the back and a Parkway in her dad's car which I move to other people's cars if a friends parent is transporting her.

I am beginning to feel kind of bad about it because of her age. Most of her friends ride in the front of their parents cars or in the back in just a seat belt. However I don't hink she is big enough. I am not to sure though.

When she is in the Parkway, which is not oftern, she is very restless. Can sit still, tries to look all around, tries to raise herself up to see over the passenger seat.

Can I put the husky in the front seat with the airbag off? Should I try buying another booster? Am I correct in thinking she is not ready to ride in the front seat in just a seatbelt. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Holly

She is obviously not ready based on her behaviour, and riding in the front seat is not a reward. She needs to understand that doing so is dangerous. Also, she needs to understand how dangerous it is to move around in her booster. If she won't/can't sit still she is not ready for it and should remained harnessed.

Its not recommended until they're at least 12. And a tech I talked to yesterday mentioned that some states are raising that age to 14. So, I wouldn't.

It's one of those, "but, everyone else is doing it," things. Doesn't make it good/right for you.

Anyone have a good video clip of airbag deployment? I have the tech video that I share with parents/kids.

I also tell about my tech class where one had been removed from a car. It was deployed and acted just like fireworks shooting about 8-10 feet in the air!

definitely not. it would not be safe for a child that size to be in a front seat ESPECIALLY if there's an air bag; the force that those things hit with is extreme.
it says in at least 10 places in my owner's manual that no child under 12 should ever ride in the front; thats the bare minimum, and it's also printed on the sun visors.

Everyone else has larger breasts than me, too, but I don't beg for bigger ones :p (TMI: I'm a 30A/32NA) Sorry, that might seem a bit crass, but I found it humorous -- I agree with Rebekah that her behavior is showing she's not ready....

Children under 13 should not sit in the front. Period. (Unless there is no other safe position in the vehicle, which obviously is not the case when the back is full of empty seats). All front seat passengers, regardless of age, have about a 40% higher risk of serious/fatal injury  :(

Just as I do not start the car until everyone is buckled, the rule is that an 11 year old sits in the back -- at 13 & 4'9" after showing she understands it's not a reward/punishment she could sit in the front, but even at 26 years old I prefer to ride in the back when I'm not driving!

Also, if she's only 4'2" tall does she pass the 5 Step Test or does she still need a booster to be safest?
