2 year old w/ special needs

I was contacted today by a woman that works with a 2 year old with secial needs. She is FF, but has no head control. That's all I know of her special needs so far. I'm told she's too long for RF (I'd be very surprised if she really is). I know Mom was looking at an "adapted carseat" that cost $700 but can't afford it.

Of course, I have no experience with special needs, only what I've read on here. So I'm trying to help them find the right resources. That's not my question though.

What seat could she be looking at that's $700??

If it's only head control that's the issue, what would be a good seat? Wouldn't any RF seat work because a newborn doesn't have head control either....?

I know I've seen the Recaro seats reccomended for low muscle tone, any others?

I think the Roosevelt costs that much. There might be others.

Without knowing all the details, RF would likely be the best bet. Recaro seats are usually recommended for kids who need additional support but don't need a special needs seat.

However, without having special needs training, I would get the family in touch with a tech who does. I don't have the link, but there is a website that lists technicians who have been through the training.

I did find a list of CPST, SN in my area and sent it to her :)

I was just wondering those things for my own knowledge. I would love to have SN training....but I don't think there's any here, at least not anytime soon.

Call MD KISS....they are likely to be some of the best resource for SN issues in MD. At least 2 of them there were my instructors and I continue to have interactions with them at checks over here.

KISS owns the Hippo seats that get loaned out all over the state for spica casts.

My first thought for a 2 yr old with low tone is to return them RF, but it sounds like parents needed some education why that's best and easiest. With so few people who do ERF---turning their child FF probably made them feel like their child was more like a typical child rather than a SN child.

I also recommend the Recaro's a lot for those SN kids too big to RF but don't quite need a "real" SN seat.

My daughter has very low torso tone and while she RF's most of the time, when she does FF the Signo is the only seat that will support her and keep her head up.

So If she truly needs a SN seat, there's not much you can do. But with a child who just has a few issues, I'd try RFing again with educating why it's so important for both SN AND "normal" children.

If that's a no go, or the child is too big-a Recaro is a good bet.

I agree... Recaros have the most padding... I'd go with one in a heartbeat for a child with poor head control. Then, if the 2yr old really IS too long or too heavy to rf, you know the head will probably be okay.

but the Recaro is also a very long seat, so chances are, while other rf seats might have been outgrown, rfing will be doable in this seat.

Special Needs seats are so expensive! It's the biggest reason I would try to find a traditional seat that would work, if there is a traditional seat that would work.
