free care seats?

I know of a child (through my work agency) who is in need of a carseat. Her mom cannot afford one. Are there any resources for them? They do qualify for assistance. If it comes down to it, I could buy a scenera for them. But I would like to know of any resources.

I do know that the Kyle David Miller foundation provides carseats for children in need.

here is the link http://www.kyledavidmiller.org/

sorry I don't have more information but hopefully that will get you started and someone else might be able to chime in with other options.

Good luck.

It depends on your local programs.

Some hospitals have them. Here, the health department provides them on an income based sliding scale.

How old and what size is the child?

Thanks for all of the replies! I thought the Kyle David Miller Foundation stopped accepting applications because of such a long waiting list. I'll look into that again.
I honestly don't know anything about the child other than they have outgrown the infant car seat and he/she is under 3. I placed a call to get more information, but I was also looking for info at the same time. I'm in PA and the family is in Chester county. I had no luck looking for programs, but I'm not always the best at finding things on the internet.

ETA: I did try the Safe Kids in their county, but they were closed for the day. I did find something on the County Maternal and Child Health Consortium website saying that Safe Kids replaces unsafe car seats at their checks. I wasn't sure about that. I'll call tomorrow and see if there's any checks coming up.

You could try calling fire departments, police departments, or the local WIC office... they may be able to help you with a community resource.

I know our city (I live in Indiana though) does a big drive twice a year where you can take your expired seat, or if you can't afford a seat, and get a new one. Of course, they're only providing the $40 Scenera, not something real expensive... but it's a great program and I'm glad they do it! Then there is a local office you can call through the year if you're low income and can't afford a car seat. They will get you one for free.

Your Safe Kids chapter/coalition should be able to either help your or tell you who has seats. In our county it is Safe Kids (which is housed at/near the Health Dept, so some people think it is the Health Dept providing seats), the Sheriff's Dept. and Pregnancy Helpline (when they have them and they will provide used seats if they are donated...). We also have several churches that accept and then hand back out used car seats in their baby pantries. Good luck! It's nice of you to help!

I don't know where Chester county is. But I do know there's a Car Seat Lady in Philly. Her mom is the CSL in Baltimore and I know she sometimes gives away carseats. Try contacting her?

I know here, our low income state provide health insurance will provide 1 seat per child (they have to pick infant or convertible, they only get 1).

Thanks for all of the replies. I passed the info along to the woman who works directly with the family. I also offered to buy one if she still needed it, but she thought she would be able to get one. I should really have these resources anyway. I'm sure it will eventually come up again with one of the families I work with.
