Do I need to use the locking clip for a Mercury Mariner 08 in the center seat? The instructions stink that come with the car seat.

Vehicles sold in the U.S. since the 1996 model year have been required to have seatbelts that lock in some way for installing child restraints and don't require the use of a locking clip. That said, if you're by any chance installing the Scenera rear facing with a lap-shoulder belt that locks at the shoulder belt retractor, you might find it helpful to use a locking clip instead of locking the seatbelt at the retractor to possibly avoid having the Scenera tilt. This primer on seatbelt types and how they lock, and when and how to use a locking clip, can also help you out:

Edited to add: If you would like a visual aid/installation demo, CarSeat Site's YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=CarSeatSite also has several helpful online installation videos showing how to install a rear facing or forward facing Scenera convertible seat with LATCH or with the seatbelt, including one showing how to install rear facing with a locking clip. The CarSeat Site's videos with "convertible" in the video's title/description feature the Scenera convertible seat.

To Jeanum,
Hi, I also have a Cosco Scenera and have had no luck installing it into the center rear seat of my scion xb. It is rear facing and we have to use the lap/shoulder belt since the LATCH system doesn't work for the center seat. Do you know if it's possible to get a tight fit when the lap/shoulder belt is the type with 2 latches (the shoulder belt comes straight down first, attaches into a clip and then when you pull the lap belt over your lap, it locks into a clip as usual) because of having a latch on both sides, it seems like no matter where I place the locking clip, the other side is so lose that i can literally push the car seat over onto it's side! Any suggestions?

The locking clip needs to go right by the latchplate. Pull tight, then unbuckle. Attach locking clip, and buckle.

Ditto to Judi's advice. Also, if that doesn't improve the installation in the center so that there's less than one inch of movement at the Scenera's belt path, I would try installing the Scenera outboard with LATCH or the seatbelt instead of fighting with the first generation xB's less than friendly center rear seatbelt.
