A simple way to get better gas mileage -air filter

Most people probably know this but, I want to share my experience. I know there are a lot of things you can do to get better MPG but I didn't know what a difference a dirty air filter can make.

I drive a 1999 Plymouth Voyager and was tracking my gas milege and getting about 14 MPG. (I drive mostly hgwy)

After an oil change, my husband finally "found the time" to change my air filter, and now I get nearly 20 MPG!!

These are averages over a few months, not just a one time fluke. He probably replaced the filter that came with the van! It was nasty!! LOL

So if you haven't changed your air filter in a long time... try it.

Oil change can affect mileage too. All maintenance has the possibility of helping gas mileage on older cars.

In newer cars, an air filter might not do anything cuz they now have more sophisticated computers that can deal with the decreased air flow of a dirty air filter.

What you should check often is your tire pressure. Don't let it get low. Keep em properly inflated. That's the easiest and quickest way to get better gas mileage. In my state, gas stations are required to let you use their air pump for free if you buy gas from them. And there's usually a tire pressure guage built into the pump so you don't even need any equipment.

When did this go into effect? I was born and raised in NorCal (lived there up until 2.5yrs ago) and have always had to pay to use the air whether I bought gas or not....I got gyped!

A dirty air filter is a major power gobbler. Keeping it clean is important both for mileage, and performance. If you are planning on keeping your vehicle for a long time, a cleanable, high performance air filter may be worth the investment. They allow better airflow than traditional paper filters (giving more power and better mileage), and are cheap to clean (a $15 cleaning kit will clean the filter 4 or 5 times  ), however the initial purchase (around $70 depending on vehicle) is difficult to spend at first. I've run K&N filters in two different trucks, and noticed both an increase in power and mileage, and will get them for my next vehicles.

Quite a while. next time you're at a gas station, look on the side of the air compressor. There should be a sign stating this law. It just says gas stations are required to provide free air to "customers". No mention of a minimum purchase. I just go in and ask the attendant to turn on the pump for me. They never ask for a receipt, etc (I pay at the pump).
