Rear Facing weight limits

I had a client ask about rear facing weight limits. She's currently using an infant carrier that her son is getting too heavy for, but he's only 9m. Am I correct that all convertibles (Britax, Alpha-omega's etc) will rear face for as long as you're comfortable?

Thanks

No. With the exception of the Graco Comfortsport, which has a 30 lb RF weight limit, all seats on the market have RF weight limits of 35 pounds. The Sunshine Kids Radian currently has a 33 lb limit, but is supposedly changing to 35 lbs soon. All convertibles can be used RFing until the weight limit is reached OR there is one inch of shell above the head.

All convertibles have a weight limit for RF. It ranges between 22 and 35 lbs for all US seats on the market right now.

No, every convertible seat manufacturer sets their own rf'ing weight limits based on their own crash testing and the performance of their seats. Some seats have a maximum rf'ing limit of 30lbs, while others go as high as 35lbs.

It's very important to follow the max rf'ing weight limit provided by the manufacturer. Thankfully most kids don't hit 35lbs before their 1st birthday, and a lot of the chunky monkeys will even make it to 18mos even before hitting 35lbs.

Looking at the weight limits on seats - for both rf'ing and ff'ing modes, when shopping for seats is an important part of making sure the seat fits her child. She should also check that it installs well in her vehicle and that she finds it easy to use.

Don't forget rf height limits. Rf seats are outgrown by height when there is less than 1" of shell above the child's head, as measured in this thread. Seats like the Graco ComfortSport and Britax Roundabout have relatively short shells and are usually outgrown by height well before weight.

The AAP recommends rear facing to the limits of the seat, whether weight or height. Rf is 4-5 times safer for children under age 2.
