Question Used Safe Seat

So I bought a Graco SafeSeat on CraigsList today for $10!!! I'm not going to use the actual seat, I just wanted an extra cover because my BFing baby has blowouts ALL THE TIME, and we dont own a washer. So my question is: What should I do with the actual seat? The lady says its never been in an accident and it looks great (though looks can be deceiving), but I still dont think I quite trust it, just because I dont know the *total* history. But if I just throw it away I KNOW one of the neighbors will nab it, cover or no cover. (I live in income based housing and you'd be surprised at the stuff people around here dumpster dive for.) Helk, they'd probably even USE it without a cover ! So what should I do with it?

Anything you can chop up, do it. If you can take the handle off, do it. Cut the straps. Write dangerous, do not use, crashed on it. Make it fugly ;)

I'd actually use the seat as a feeding chair, or an outside chair, or a post bath chair, or a tv chair for when she's older. I wouldn't destroy it to be honest. I'd just never use it in the car. (this assuming you'll keep the cover on until you need the cover as a spare.. while the pink one is washing).

I kind of agree with Angie. We had two infant seats for DD, and it actually came in handy. She had really bad reflux, and her dr recommended having her sleep in her car seat when it was acting up. And she also has mild asthma and needs breathing treatments once in a while - it was nice to have this extra seat to put her in while she got the treatments (i.e. it was great to be able to strap her down ).

Wow, thats brilliant lol. I cant believe I didnt even think of just keeping it around the house! And when she gets older she can use it for play babies or tons of other stuff. I was just all gung-ho on destroying it and didnt even think of all the usefull stuff it could be, without actually using it in the car. Thanks, you truely are genious lol

Just keep in mind that (along with 4000 other things that present danger) loose straps in an unoccupied seat can be a strangulation hazard. Down the road, when it's a 'play seat' I'd remove the harness altogether. For now I'd just make sure the seat is out of reach when dd isn't using it. :twocents:

My children 3 and 19 months are obsessed with an old graco snugride at our house. They use it like a recliner to watch TV etc. My 3 year old DD also uses it for her babies. I just keep the straps buckled when she is not playing with it with her babies.

Just be careful, because at 3 years old they can undo the chest clip. They could then get their body in the seat, and their head caught around the straps. A snugride would be different, but the hazard is still there.

My son did THIS, within a few minutes. He would have basically hung himself to death if I had not been there watching him. I had the seats inside because I was cleaning them. He was stuck, and was starting to panic right when I took this shot.

...and if you need to keep that spare cover IN your car for those blow-outs (which we know ALL about, ugh), you could buy one of those horrible, evil, dangerous aftermarket covers for it.

sounds like you got a great deal for a spare cover! i would take a sharpie and write do not use on the shell of the seat just so you dont forget which is which or something

My DD was obsessed with the SnugRide as a play seat/toy once I dragged it out of the closet when I was pg. We kept it buckled and she just sat on the buckles. Weird kid, I know. I did usually keep a blanket folded up on top to cushion it a bit. Fun for keeping dollies safe.

I would still take permanant marker and label the sides..Don't USE... BEEN in crash

That way, if anyone sees it and asks why you have two, you can just say, oh, this one isn't safe in a car, but it's okay to use in the house as a feeding chair/baby seat.
