Burned Car Seats in the Van, Now What??

So now that we know the car seats I had in van are burned up and totally unusable, what is my next step?

The Van was towed to a wrecked car lot and is chained in, But Monday we can go see it and get any personal things out that were not damaged like CD's and stuff in the glove box. Plus I want to take more pictures for insurance. DH is slightly pissed that we had just filled the van up with Gas the night before. He wants his $63 in gas back.

So do I leave the car seats in the van for the insurance adjusters. Or do I take them out and put them in my side room away from my kids. I am only thinking of taking them so no one else can steal them and use them. I want them destroyed correctly. I know the frame on both the Regent and the RF MA are not melted, they have smoke damage. But I dont know what temps the inside of the van got to, I dont know what extreme temps can do the the plastics that the seats are made out of and how un safe the could be.

So I am just wondering what you all would do if it was your car?

I have a Smoking Deal for any one who wants an MA or a Regent. Just Kidding of course. :D

I'd take them. The insurance folks can look at pics or come to your house to see them. Likely they will just see the pics and account for their replacement.

(Maybe you should keep them and post pics when people ask about aftermarket/custom covers,)

Could you call the insurance company and ask if they need to see them? If they do, ask if you can have them afterwards to destroy them properly. If not, I would probably go ahead and take them out. Or cut the straps.

I would leave everything so the insurance adjusters can see. Later, I would attempt to clean the regent cover, evern though I know the smoke smell would never come out. I would still have to try.

It might actually come out in a wash or two. DD and I went through a spot of intense smoke on the highway a few months back. The interior of my car reeked. Her seat smelled HORRIBLE! Febreezing and then washing it, made it come totally clean. The straps were the problem point. But I think rubbing a wetted cloth with febreeze stopped it.

When my house burned, I tried everything, nothing worked. They still smell, 8 years later. I feel there is a difference between smoke only and fire/smoke.

Ask the insurance company before taking them. Taking them may be the difference in receiving reimbursement or not. You had almost $1000 in seats in that van and that would suck not to get them replaced becasue you took them with you.

I do not recomend removing anything until the adjustor has seen the can with all its contents and damage.
