Used, large vehicle suggestions

How much weight / concern do I place on older, large vehicle crash test ratings? (Think Excursion, Suburban) A lot have never been tested. Or should I go with a smaller, newer SUV that has been tested?

Edited because this was my original post before I realized my real question is about how safe a very large vehicle/ truck is:
Our search for a vehicle has taken us in a new direction. My husband wants to buy something that can easily tow a popup and have plenty of room inside. I am going to need to use it everyday, so I don't want gas milege to be that bad, but I know it will be bad. Our max budget is $10K and safety is a big issue with me.
We originally were looking for something 2006 or newer because of the great safety features now becoming standard but I'm not sure our budget will allow that since bigger vehicles = bigger price tags.
I am also concerned that alot of the big, older vehicles we have considered haven't been crash tested. Should I stay away from these?
This search has been a PAIN because I have been very hung up on crash test ratings and informedforlife.org results.
We will have two carseats and three adults riding on a regular basis.
Any suggestions?

If all you're going to be towing is a popup, you won't need an SUV as big as the Excursion or Suburban. These are rated for trailers up to 5 or 6 thousand pounds, and a popup will be less than 2000lbs. Most smaller SUV's will have no problem towing one of these, and will be sufficiently rated to do so (Check GVWR on door sticker). If a trailer is not required to have electric brakes (less than 2000lbs total weight rating), most SUV's and minivans will be able to tow them safely and legally.

I agree with Beeman. If your going with a popup trailer something like a Dodge Durango would be a good option. It has 3 rows of seating for 3 adults & 2 kids in car seats.
