HBB and air travel

We are new to using a booster so on our recent trip I couldn't figure out how to get our Parkway to CA without checking it. I wound up getting a Ride Safer Travel Vest for the trip to and from the airport and using another Parkway while we were there (because I don't want him in just the vest for every day use, even on vacation). DS1 is only 5 so I don't want to use a LBB but how in the world do you get a HBB to where you're going?

When we travel by air with our booster, we use our turbo booster which can split into two pieces. We carry the base with us on the plane as carry-on and pack the back of the booster in our luggage. This way, if the airline looses our baggage, at least we have a backless booster to use at our destination.

The compass booster folds so it might fit into the overhead bin as a single carry-on.

This is pretty much what we've figured has to be done. I looked into the Compass seat, but folded it is still over the maximum linear length the airline we will be flying on for a carry-on. I wasn't willing to take that chance that they would let it slide, so we'll be doing the HBB and splitting it to carry-on just the bottom.
