36 pound 10 month old: what do I do now?

I have asked all around and was hoping some one had a solution. We are using an alpha omega seat now, rear-facing. He is also 31 inches long. Is there anyway to make him safer besides not driving? Are there any seats that go over a 35 lb. limit RF?

Another question is what seat would you recommend when he exceeds 40 lbs., which I think could be in his second year if he continues his current growth pattern.

Thanks!

Tough Choice

There is no good solution. The main factor is that you are over the rear-facing weight limit of your seat. Following manufacturer's instructions takes precedence in determining "best practice".

The 1 year AND 20 pound weight limit is very important, but it is still only a guideline. Unfortunately, I know of no carseats that go rear-facing beyond 35 pounds.

I believe the best practice is to have your child front-facing in the harness, though this is not a desirable option. You could make your own choice to continue rear-facing, but be aware that the seat has not been tested above this limit, and may or may not be safe.

Unfortunately, there isn't much money to be an incentive for manufacturer's to provide products for babies who are way, way off the growth charts. Since over 95% of babies are under 26 pounds at 10 months, your child is a rare exception to the "rules of thumb" for carseat safety.
