Broken EPP/EPS foam... how broken before needing to be replaced?

Something that's not come up in any carseat conversation yet. Not even the silent ones in my head.

Let's say the EPP foam is broken. Broken as in an edge piece has snapped off, say, the length of your hand. Do I...

1. Throw it away... I'll be fine without.
2. Throw it away... along with the rest of the foam piece, and get a replacement.
2. Place it back where it belongs and let the cover hold it in place.
3. Place it back where it belongs, but take measures with sticky something to get it to really stick.

And how much of the EPP can be missing without it being a concern, if at all? I mean, if it's in a spot where impact is highly probable, it's a given that it needs to be replaced. But where it usually breaks is along the edges, from what I've seen experienced. What's the official guideline on this?

It's come up in several on here but I'm too lazy to search.....
Depends on what kind of seat it is I guess, and what the mfr says. I called SKJP on mine, which had broken off at the crease where the back meets side wing. They said to tape with duct tape back in place and it is fine. Other mfr's might be diffferent, and sometimes you can order a new piece. DO NOT use any of those super glues (from experience) they eat away the foam instead of gluing it.....
