Britax Frontier - Did I order it too quickly?

My son is turning 6 this summer and it just about 42 inches tall and less than 40 lbs. I put his perfectly good Britax Marathon on Ebay at auction and ordered him a new Britax Frontier this past weekend. Was I too hasty? Could I have got more years out of his Marathon ?
His head was sticking out above the Marathon (about 5 inches or so), so that got me thinking its time to make the switch, but now I am having second thoughts....

if his ears were above the shell or his shoulders above the top harness, then yeah he needed a new seat.
