flying with seat

I will be flying alone w/my DS next month (he will 8.5 months).
I have a Scenera for the plane & destination & a Tote-A-Tot (sorry, I don't know how to do links , but like the traveling toddler I have seen recommended) with the rolling carryon to get us through the airports.

A couple of questions:

1) How easy or difficult will it be to install the seat on the plane? It is currently not installed we will be making the switch from his infant seat this weekend, so I have been trying to play with it. It looks like the plane seatbelt needs to get threaded the same way the LATCH did, but that was not an easy process so maybe I am missing something.

2) What am I supposed to do with DS while I am installing the seat? Is this one of those moments where you just have to rely on someone else to help? He's really not steady enough to sit in the regular seat while I install the car seat. Any suggestions?

Also, if anyone has the LATCH manual, we will be installing it in a 2002 Olds Intrigue (and maybe a 2004 Dodge Intrepid). I would love to know ahead of time the LATCH positions available for the Scenera if someone has that info.

Thanks!

I've never installed a Scenera before, but I've heard that in most cases, a length of pool noodle is necessary to get a good install.

If you won't be flying for another month, I would think that your baby will be sitting up much better by then, and you could seatbelt him into a plane seat next to you while you install the seat on the plane. You could also consider carrying him on your back in a sling of some sort. A flight attendant may also be willing to hold your baby while you install the seat.

Definately ask to preboard.

Good luck!

the seatbelt goes under the cover at the front of the seat- the same as the LATCH belt.

it's not too difficult to install on the plane, but the buckle might be right under his legs. It also might be a bit upright. You can have the FA hold him while you install the seat.

The Intrigue never had LATCH. You'll have to use a seatbelt. Are you sure on the year of the Intrepid? The LATCH manual stops at 2003, but 02-03 had LATCH in all 3 positions. You might want to throw a rolled towel or pool noodle in your luggage to be sure you can get the appropriate rf recline in these vehicles. The Scenera almost always needs something.

We got back from our trip last week. The airport/airplane seat thing was way easier than I thought & tons of people (not just the flight attendants) were willing to help

As a point of clarification, the Intrigue did (does) have LATCH. I installed with the seatbelt at the airport, but noticed the LATCH symbol on the seats. So, I checked the manual when we got to the house & it has LATCH for both outboard seating positions. Not sure why the manual would say that it doesn't (unless I got the year wrong?).

I'm glad your trip went well. Are you sure it was an Intrigue? According to the LATCH manual, they 01-02 MYs had TAs, but never any lower anchors. The Alero and Aurora did have LATCH.

I always "install" my kids w/ the seatbelt into my seat, while I install their seats. This is assuming that child can sit upright unaided. :D
