Thinking about putting my 8 year old back into a booster/carseat?

My oldest son is currently w/o a restraint. I am second guessing this decision, and would like to put him back into a booster or a Britax Regent. He is 8 years old and 62lbs.

What are the advantages of a 5 point restraint at this age and weight?

My other son is currently in a Britax Parkway. He is 6 years old and about 45lbs. I am also considering putting him back into his Britax Wizard (similar to the current Boulevard).

When ever I look back at them (back seat of a Honda Odyssey) they seem slouched and not well contained. I check their seat belts each time we get in the car. FWIW, I have two other children in first row, a 3 year old in a Wizard and a newborn (5 weeks) in a infant carrier car seat (Peg Perego), will eventually be in a Boulevard.

One thought is to put my 8 year old in the Parkway and 6 year old in the Wizard. This would not require purchasing a new seat. However, I just want to do what is safest.

Any advice on extended harnessing is appreciated.

Much appreciation,

Kimberly

At 8 and 62 pounds, the Regent probably will be your only option (my daughter is 50.5 inches tall and 59 pounds and has about an inch of torso room in a Regent). How mature is he? Does he sit still in the seatbelt? If so, I think a booster is absolutely okay. He could be slouching because he doesn't pass the 5 step test ( http://www.carseat.org/Boosters/630.htm ). Your 6yo could be slouching because the Parkway is too narrow or not supportive enough for his legs (my daughter slouched in the PW for the latter reason).

Your 6yo may not fit in the Wizard, shoulders must be at or below top harness slot position to still fit. Most kids get too tall for most seats before the stated weight limit.

Whatever seats you decide on, good for you for deciding to put your 8yo back into a booster. It's a very rare 8yo who is truly ready to do without the booster.
