What is the exact purpose of HUGS?

Somebody asked me and I really didnt know what they were supposed to do exactly and why they are not required when RF?

The HUGS are to reduce Forward head excursion and to distribute forces better. The higher weight seats ddid not pass FF crash test without then. That is why they added them and they are required for FF.

ETA: Not required RF because the force direction is different than when FF. DOes not pull on the harness the same.

they are designed to reduce head excursion in a frontal impact. they were originally designed specifically to address a failure of a long-discontinued britax model (someone on here can remember which one, i'm sure) to pass FMVSS213-specified limits for head excursion. they probably work by spreading out the crash force over a larger chest area, and thus reducing the head excursion enough to pass the requirements. britax then went on to patent their "patch" and market it as a safety "exclusive" :rolleyes:.
