hi out there. i have been having an ongoing discussion w my wife and inlaws about the safest place for my 6 yr old in our 98 volvo v70 xc. i cannot find the answer anywhere. we do not have rear side airbags but what i understand from the engineering oof the vehicle is that there is a wonderful volvo steel cage around the passenger area. i feel behind the passenger front is the safest because of the cage and he will not go flying through the windshield if an accident were to occur. they believe the center to be the safest becuse it is further from the doors and further away from a side impact. anyone want to chime in?

If all seating positions have a lap/shoulder belt and the booster fits appropriately (I'm assuming he's in a booster), then center would be furthest from a point of impact.

If he's in a booster and the center only has a lap belt, then he MUST be outboard with a lap/shoulder belt.

If he's still in a harnessed seat, then if you can get a great install in the center and it's top tethered, then I would use the center.

Yes, Center will always be the safest position as long as your child in an appropriate seat and being used correctly.

Your child won't go flying through the wind shield if your child is properly restrained in a booster with a lap/shoulder belt or a 5pt harness child restraint. The further you are from the point of impact the better. Less chance of occupant & intruding vehicle making impact with each other.

If your vehicle does not have a lap/shoulder belt in the center and your child is in a booster seat. I would look at a booster with side impact protection esp in a vehicle without side impact airbags and a child having to be in the outboard position.
