but is it possible to safely put carseats in an older model VW bug? I know they are really small, but it's been forever since I've had one. So . . . do I have to wait till my kids are out of carseats before getting one again?

I remember riding in the tiny space behind the back seat (you know that area right by the back window). I am sure that wasn't very safe back then, but my parents didn't seem to know that at the time. That sure was a fun car to have.

Our 1973 model bug was retrofitted with shoulder belts in the back seat, but I am not sure if some of the other years had them or not. I am guessing a couple carseats would fit in the backseat of the bug (probably not the regent though), but it might be harder with a rearfacing seat. Not sure where any tether points might be for that car though if you wanted to add any.

Hopefully someone here has a bug and can say how well carseats fit in it. Ours was sold in 1996 when I was needing a more reliable car.

No. You can't safely put carseats in an older VW? What are you thinking lady? You can't have "fun" cars until the kids are done and gone. And then you have grandkids, so you can't have them then either.

No, seriously, so long as your VW has belts, it's cool. However, it might be a good idea to have new belts (lap/shoulder) put in - you have no idea if they've been in an accident or whatever. And something w/ SIP would be good, too.

ETA: Once the kids get bigger, you might have issues - you really need headrests for everyone, blah blah blah, and lap/shoulder belts or car-seats. So long as you keep the kiddos in harnessed seats for a bit, you can get by w/ lapbelts, but it's not going to last forever, you know?

No really, I like harnessed seats! I don't want to think about my babies being big enough to outgrow them!!! :eek:

Thanks for the imput! It seems the radian would probably be a good seat given it's slim design . . .

The headrest thing really would be a challenge though.
