Question Is a HBB safer than backless for small 8yo?

My just-turned 8-year-old wants to switch to a backless booster. He is small, 48 inches and about 46 pounds. Belt fit on the backless (Clek Oobr with back removed) is good, and our car is new and has side-impact airbags. Still I feel that what I read is conflicting and there are suggestions, especially in Europe, that backless boosters are clearly less safe even with a good belt fit. I can't decide what to do, and if I wait how long to wait. Any input is welcome, thank you!

You can see the carseatblog.com response to the British advertising campaign against backless boosters here: https://carseatblog.com/34332/bin-the-booster-campaign/

We actually don't have any data that a back on a booster improves safety. There is a lot of conjecture that new booster riders are helped by the reminder to sit still that comes from the back, but that doesn't really apply to your son.

My 7 year old is in a backless because he's big enough that I would have to have a booster without LATCH to keep him in a HBB. He loves it, and does great in it.

This is the original poster here, thank you for this information! It sounds from this though that it's recommended children stay in high back boosters until they are outgrown... is that right? DS is definitely not close to outgrowing ours.

There are certainly some people who recommend it, but it's not really an evidence based recommendation. I would have no qualms moving an 8 year old to a backless booster.

I agree with PP. I let my kids switch to a NBB when they were 8 if it was appropriate. They both still use HBB in our Truck because of the lack of headrests. And when we were doing a long drive I would have DS use a HBB because he's a car sleeper and it was easier and more comfy for him (he'd request it if we were doing a road trip).
