My DS is 5 1/2 , (46 pounds, and about 45 inches tall) and rides in a Recaro HBB full time. We have run into a situation where about one time a month, my co worker who has a daughter in my son's class will be picking him up and taking him back to her house. It is a 3 mile drive on surface streets. Would a LBB be okay for such occaisional use, and what ones would you recommend? Thanks!

Absolutely I would use a LBB for carpooling (and do so with my own kids). There is no strong evidence of increased safety for HBB over LBB for kids that know how to ride properly in a booster.
I recommend the Harmony youth booster, it is widely available for a reasonable price at Walmart and doesn't have screws or any parts to assemble.

Target usually has a wall of boosters, Amp, Turbo, Cosco Top Side (which is comparable to the Harmony in price and weight).
