Question Help with New SureRide

Looking for help with a Evenflo SureRide and 2004 Toyota Highlander. We have an old Evenflo that we got used and is expiring. DD is 12m and 25.5 lbs. don't know current height, but at 9m she was 28". My mom got us the new seat for Christmas. We just got it tonight and we want to install it tomorrow morning before traveling home (4+hr drive in a packed car-- no room for extra car seat). I am reading the manual and referring to the car manual, but I won't have a chance to see a tech so I'm seeking help here. Any particular tips or warnings for this car/seat combination? I'd like to post in the thread as I read and have questions, but here's my first: It appears we DO have side air bags, and it looks to me like it is acceptable to put a car seat beside them (outboard positions?). Is this right-- it's acceptable? We want the car seat to be rear facing directly behind the driver. I don't know if it will work to put the seat in the middle, because 9 yr old DS typically sits behind front passenger side for school car lane drop offs and puck ups, and he uses a booster because he is not 4'9" yet.

Yes, car seats can be installed outboard with side curtain airbags.

No experience with your vehicle, but I was pleased with the ease of install in a Hyundai Sonata (2010ish, I think). LATCH worked great, so I didn't try a seat belt install.

It did take up quite a bit of front-to-back space, so that would be my main concern putting it behind the driver.

Side curtain airbags are not a safety concern. Side Impact Airbags are the ones people commonly worry about, however, as long as the passenger next to them is in position, they are completely safe. ;) That applies to ALL passengers, grown ups down to babies. Obviously, your baby will be properly strapped into a rear facing car seat, therefore, in position. :) And Side Impact Airbags (and curtain airbags) do not inflate at the same high speeds that frontal airbags to. Even if a person leans over a bit, I don't worry about them too much.

Before you install the seat, put the driver's seat upright. Even we adults should sit with our seats fairly upright, not too reclined, to have the best protection of the seatbelts and airbags. This will also give the rear facing seat the most room.

Read the manual. I don't know who upright the Sure Ride is allowed to be, but a healthy 12 month old baby can sit fairly upright provided the car seat's manual allows it.

Post back with pictures if you need any help..if no pics, just ask anyways.

The Sureride has a level line, and doesn't allow for a more upright installation. :(

Although I'd probably make the parental choice to install more upright rather than have a super uncomfortable driver or FF a 1 year old, if those were the only options.

Thank you! I read both the SureRide manual and the Highlander manual and feel pretty confident I got a good install. I had to move the driver seat up a bit, but DH said he was perfectly comfortable. The baby slept 2 of the 4 hr ride, even though she'd already had a 2 hr nap, so she must have been pretty comfortable, too! There is a tech at our pediatrician's office, so I will try to get it checked this week when we go for the 12 month well visit.
