Convertible seat tips over

I'm having my first child and we just installed our convertible car seat in its rear facing position. I'm concerned because I am able to tip the car seat so the top of his seat rests on the cars headrest. This would cause the baby to dangle from his safety straps. It's not easy enough to do that I think it would tip like this during day to day driving. But in the case of an accident I'm positive that it would. We have it connected using the latch system but we also tried it with the car belts and had the same issue. It's plenty tight there is practically no wiggle in any other direction. I live in a small town so there is no place that can help me install it even our fire department doesn't have the funding to assist. Please help. I'm not sure if this is normal, and if not how do I fix it?

What seat do you have? It is normal for the head area to be able to lift. It will lift up in an accident but it's not a danger. There is debate on whether that lifting is better or not. Some seats have an anti rebound bar or can be tethered rearfacing to limit that movement, but it's not unsafe. As long as there is less than 1" of movement at the belt path, it's ok.

It's a graco seat. Where the belt is attached isn't moving. The entire seat just rotates around that point

Also depending on the seat, make sure it's installed at the correct angle. Sometimes when seats are too upright (example: Scenera), it's easy to do that vs when they're at the proper angle, they have a harder time being tipped up.

That's perfectly normal for that kind of seat, and not a problem. I know it seems weird, but there's nothing in everyday driving that will cause that to happen.

In a frontal crash, the seat will rotate downward first (toward the front of the car) before rebounding, which is the motion you're talking about. The baby won't dangle from the straps if they're tightened properly.
