LATCH limits

Does anyone know why different auto manufacturers have different LATCH limits? Wouldn't it be a lot easier for them to all make their limits the same? It would eliminate a lot of possible misuse. Since there are different limits does this mean that there is really a difference in the strength of various LATCH points in different cars? Also, how do they account for the weight difference of various seats? Obviously the Scenera is much lighter than the Radian.

Thanks!

i can't answer the first part of your Q, but as for the weight differences, it's just assumed a seat will have a typical average weight, and the weight limits were calculated with some safe overhead for heavy seats. they are based on child weight to simplify things for the end user and avoid confusion.

Dh and I were just talking about this today. My Ford manual says 48 lbs child weight is the latch limit. I was thinking that 48 is an odd weight to use for a limit. It would make sense to me that this was chosen because 40 lbs is the standard weight for kids to stop riding in car seats and 8 lbs to account for the weight of the car seat itself. So... We're wondering if we should stop using latch when the total weight of the car seat and child is 48 lbs, or just the child? What about our heavyweight car seats (Radian, BV, & MA)? Do we really know for sure that the manufaturers took into account higher weight seats?

I guess I added more questions instead of answering yours :)
