Rear Facing Britax Boulevard Seems Loose

I installed a Britax Boulevard rear facing using the LATCH system. I got the LATCH harnesses good and tight. The seat seems to be able to be moved sideways a ittle bit and if I lift from the seat at the top, where my babies head would be in a rear facing seat, the whole assembly will lift up. Given the design it looks like this is normal but I just want to be sure. We bring the little one home on Monday so any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

This is normal for a rear facing seat. However, the Boulevard, unlike most convertible seats, does have a tether which can be used rear facing, which will add stability and make it easier to get the seat to a 45 degree recline, which is critical for a newborn. As long as the seat is tight at the belt path and the recline is 45 degrees, it is correct.

Wow, thanks for the quick response. I have read on other posts that tethers are not recommended and in fact may illegal in some states which worries me. I guess if I get it as tight as possible it should be good since Britax didnt recommend tethers.

It's definitely not illegal in any state to tether your Britax seat. It would be illegal if you had an Evenflo or Graco seat (for example), because those manufacturers do not allow the tether to be used rear facing, but because Britax allows it, it is fine in every state. How much benefit it may provide is totally unknown. Britax does recommend tethering rear facing (page 21 of the manual), though it is still optional. See page 22 of the manual for instructions on how to tether the Boulevard rear facing.

You are correct that most seats cannot be tethered rf. However, Britax does allow and recommend that the seat be tethered rf. They are one of the few brands in the US that does. I'm not aware of any state in which this is prohibited.

You can read about it on pages 21-23 of your BLVD owner's manual (page 13 of that pdf).

Wow. I just reviewed the manual again and you are right. Most of my info so far has been random input from random posts. It is really difficult to get good advice anywhere. Thanks sincerely!

If you need help finding a suitable rear-facing tethering spot in your vehicle, or any other vehicle-specific help or advice, post back with your vehicle year/make/model information, as well as the seating location where the Boulevard is installed. :)

Scatterbunny, thanks for your help. I am installing the Britax Boulevard in a 2005 Maserati Quatroporte. It has LATCH anchors. I was planning to put the seat in the passenger side rear seat. It would be helpful to know where to attach the tether straps.
