car seat replacement in this type of accident, will insurance agree?

My mom was driving past a man mowing with a tractor on the side of the road yesterday when the tractor threw a rock completely thru the passenger side window of her van. The rock landed in the car seat on the drivers side and shards of glass went everywhere. Although there were no children in the car, there were 2 car seats which now have glass shards embeded in the seats and covers.
Will we be able to have insurance replace the seats in this situation?

that's a tricky one.

i've never heard of insurance replacing anything inside the car because glass had exploded... they usually just pay for the replacement glass which includes a supposed "thorough" cleaning of the car of any glass remains. (technically they are not shards... tempered glass is not really sharp, more like rocky bits).

i'd say your mom should be able to have the glass removed from the seats and vehicle, and just wash the covers after a thorough vacuuming of the rest of the seat... all the nooks and crannies. there is no real inherent safety risk, which is why the insurance may not cover a replacement.

A friend of mine had her car broken into, and her insurance replaced her seats because of the glass and blood. I would think that simply replacing the covers if the glass won't come out would be sufficient, however.

Our van window was shot out by a bb gun a couple years ago. Right on the side that ds's seat was. I asked about replacing the seat and was told that it was up to me. I made the decision to see what I could do by washing the cover and wiping the straps. It was as good as before and I couldn't justify getting rid of a seat that was about a year old. I was able to get all the bits of glass off the cover and am still using the seat today.

I'd be wanting tractor-driving guy's insurance to be replacing the glass and at least the car-seat covers.
