Carseat and broken collarbone?

The 6yo I nanny broke his right collar bone. He is in a sling and will be for about 4-6 weeks. I currently have him harnessed in a Graco Nautilus. The original plan for the summer was to drive an hour to and from the country club for tennis and golf, but that has obviously changed. That was my main reasoning for continuing to harness him. He sits in boosters in Mom and Dad's cars, but sometimes makes me a bit nervous because he doesn't always stay in position.

What do you think would work best? A booster or a harness? If I choose to booster, should I have the seatbelt guide over his right or left shoulder? I'd assume left, yes?

That's what I figured. Thanks all. Now I need to decide on a booster. There was a ProBooster on NBD that would match my ProSport. I do have a Nautilus, but a part of me would rather have a dedicated booster.

Some children are allowed to come out of a sling as needed throughout the day. The first thing I would do is verify with the child's doctor that the sling is needed while in a CR. Child is quite immobile while in a harnessed seat, which is the idea behind a sling.

Our neighbours 4 yo and my dd's classmate both broke their collarbones within days of each other last month, and the one kid was allowed to de-sling for car rides, but only after I convinced mom to ask the dr. Good thing because the child was not big enough for a booster.

Wearing the actual 5 point harness did not bother the child, just in case you're curious. :)

That said, your kiddo is 6, and I'm guessing weighs enough to use a booster.

I know you are looking at boostering him but I was chatting with an ortho tech today and thought I would throw in my 2 cents. He put the sling thing on me for a broken collar bone to see what it was like/how it fits (I was doing an inservice with him learning about all his equipment) and since we work at a pediatric hospital I figured I would ask the car seat question. He said that he just recommends to parents that they undo it for threading the arm through the harness, do up the harness, then do the sling back up (to keep the arm close to the chest and with the elbow bent) for the drive. He said that the harness straps typically don't bother kids. If you are boostering though, I would have the seat belt go across the opposite side.

Thanks Jacqui! I'm nervous about him in a booster because he does.not.sit.still. I think I'll try that before removing the harness from my Nautilus.
