Question Bus safety??

So everyday I watch my son get on the bus in front of my neighbors yard and he always chooses to be the last one on the bus. The problem is as soon as he steps on the bus, the driver shuts the door and pulls away, there is NO way he's properly seated. My DS even mentioned it the other day, so that's what really got me concerned, because maybe he tripped. I really don't think there would be an accident right there, but if she had to stop quick he could really get hurt. Should I call the bus company? I know city buses do this, but adults are probably more sure footed.

I would (and have) say something to the driver. You can also call your school district's office, and ask to talk to someone in charge of student transportation. I've done this, several times.

I'd call the bus company and ask what the policy is. Our buses wait for all the kids to be sitting with nothing in the aisle before moving. I would not be okay with my son standing/walking when it pulled away. Chances are when you call they will ask for bus info and be able to talk to the driver. I used to have a fear of making the drivers upset with my kids but lately when I have had issues they just ask for the bus number and haven't needed a child's name. Well except that ds3 got a new afternoon driver and came home 3 days without a STAR seat. I called the 3rd day when I was sure he wasn't in one (DH got him off the bus and I could see the seat from the house) and he had a STAR seat the next day. The bus driver apologized too and then proceeded to tell me how well he did without one. I just told her he was too small and left it at that...not worth arguing since it's in his IEP.

I would talk to the bus driver. The company will tell the all the drivers but not specify what bus driver is doing this. I'm a bus driver and from experience it is about 30x harder to walk while that bus is moving. When getting your bus license you fail if you haven't watched every child sit down before you take off you fail the test.

I would walk out to the bus with my child just to ask that the bus driver to not leave before the children are seated. Make sure that you don't say it rudely but also make sure that you tell them that your concerned about the safety of your child.

Our bus drivers wait until the kids are sitting AND buckled, and if a kid is having trouble, the driver gets up and helps buckle and goes back to the driver's seat. Some days, I wait 3 minutes or so to be able to wave as the bus pulls away. I'm not sure how I would handle it, but I would say something.

I called and was transferred to the bus company where I spoke to a very caring dispatcher. I explained the situation and she confirmed that the driver for sure should not be pulling ahead with kids in the stairwell. I guess they can pull out if the kids are standing by the seats ready to sit down. She talked to the driver and called me back, I guess the driver is going to try to pull more up to the curb so she isn't blocking traffic in the intersection, we believe that's why she was rushing. Guess we will see how it goes tomorrow.
