Is it terrible for a child to ride ff with slots a little too high?

We're still trying to figure out a car seat for Granny's car. Our boys are just about a year apart, both ff, and almost always 1 slot different on harness adjustment. She usually takes them one at a time for Granny days, so I'd like for them both to be able to use the seat, without needing to reinstall every time. My older son is hitting that awkward height (42") where I'm having a hard time finding a harnessed seat that still provides growing room.

Soooo....would it be terrible if we bought one of the taller seats, then kept it adjusted for the older child, and let the younger one ride in it with the harness just a bit too high for him?

How about an Evenflo Triumph Advance, with the harness that just 'zips' up and down on a track to fit each kid perfectly? It's got fairly tall top slots, like a Marathon, and a 50 pound limit, and is a wide comfy seat, for only $129 :)

I've been eyeing that seat...I love the idea, but I'm concerned it may be outgrown quickly by my oldest, and then I'd be right back to square one.

So you're about up to the point of needing a Regent or Safeguard seat if you really want to keep them harnessed a long time...
But to get to your question...no, it's actually not bad for it to be above the shoudlers an extra notch... as long as it's tightened properly and the chest clip is done properly at the armpit level, it will hold perfectly in a crash (in the olden days, you HAD to use the top slots when FF, no matter what size kid you had...kids always had them up at their ears when they went FF at 20 pounds back then and were fine :) )
