Converting a bus...

We are in the very very beginning stages of choosing to do a bus conversion (Skoolie) that we would live in full time with our 4 kids and travel.

I KNOW that RV's are frowned upon and that the usual advice is to have a car next to it but we will not be bringing a car (I am the only driver and we will most likely be pulling a trailer)

Anyhow, we haven't even bought the bus yet (that is how new this project is) but I would love to brainstorm some ideas about the project and safety so that we can start planning and looking for what we need. (please don't just say "I wouldn't do it")

I have the chance to get one 3 place bench seat out of a Sprinter (that has 3 full seat belts included) Which I thought that we could secure to the frame of the bus with the right hardware installed by a professional. We would also instal a tether anchor for my youngest when she would goes FF. That would take care of three people... especially the three youngest (2, 5 and 8)... I was thinking that for the others (my 10 yo and DH) we could either find a simular seat (with integrated seatbelts) or use the original Bus seats with seatbelts installed.

What do you think? Do you have any other ideas? Thanks so much!

What I would love to see on a conversion of that sort is a strong wall behind a passenger compartment- beyond the proper and safe restraint of the passengers my immediate next concern is entire home's worth of projectiles situated behind them.

Noting, of course, that whatever you do will not be crashtested, and you are accepting that your family may be the crash-test dummies. I would want to hopelessly over-engineer that wall and the seat installations, but we might never know if what's done has some fatal flaw in its design. At least, we'd hope to never know...

:yeahthat: DH and I have talked (not too seriously) about building a custom RV with a barrier between the "living" and "driving" areas.
