Which isn't to say they should be used. I think they work mostly by abrasion... which is probably not a good thing on car seat straps.

I saw the pictures you're talking about, Sarah. A chemist tested the pH of the sponges and found them to be less alkaline than sea water or baking soda or dish soap! Obviously, the boy reacted to something, but it doesn't seem to have been a "harsh chemical" in the sponge unless she just happened to have bought a "bad batch."
Oh, and it should also be noted that she was using the 3M version of the product, not the Mr. Clean brand (although they're probably pretty much identical in how they're made).
