First Convertible?

A friend is looking to buy her 9mo his first convertible this week. He's around 20lbs with a 12.5" torso. They drive an '08 Mazda3 GT Hatchback.. She says she'll RF to 2. :) She's leaning towards the Radian, probably solely because I liked it with DS. It's such a quirky seat though, I'm not sure she'll ultimately be happy with it. I still think the True Fit's an awesome seat, but for that lower RF limit, but seems like it would meet her RF needs? I'm not a fan of the MyRide, but maybe it'd be good for her?

Her family's in Brazil, so she will need to travel with the seat in vehicles with weird seatbelts. A reason to consider something with lockoffs?

What do you all think? :)

Lock off's would be good for travelling. At that weight, she may get more than 2yr rf out of it.

My 31lb 4yr could still rf in it. ;)

Personally, I would choose a locking clip every time over having to deal with the truefit lockoffs but I know some people love them.

I took a a look at the growth charts and a baby boy who weight 20lbs at 9mos will hit 35lbs sometime after his 3rd birthday so the TF will get him past 3 for sure. It is a light seat and easy to carry which is a plus for travel.

Amelia where do you see that chart? I'd be very interested to see what it says about my daughter.

Ya, I was going to say a Britax. or the MyRide. I'm using a Marathon right now and actually quite liking it. It's very cozy, nice harness, great fabric. Isn't honking huge so would fit well in a smaller vehicle. The MyRide is more budget friendly, and personally, I like the new buckle better than the buckle on my MA. When you push the MR button, both tongues just pop out. I need a 2nd hand to pull the tongues out on my MA. The MR can be super reclined FF though, but to be honest, TechnoKid didn't mind it, it was me that did. ;)

I am new to this forum and getting educating myself regarding convertible carseats as I have a 6 month old 20lbs daughter. You mention a "growth chart" which I assume by searching current weight/height it gives you an estimate future weight/height growth. Is this something you found online? Was daughter was long/tall at birth so I can only assume she'll continue with the genes as both my husband and I are 6 feet!

Yup, you can look at the growth curves (google it) and figure out how your baby is trending. Although they do slow down (my DS was in the 90th percentile for the first bit and has levelled off entirely, riding the 50th)

Something else to consider though is if baby is all leg versus all torso. My friend and his wife are both above that 6ft mark, but they and their baby are all leg, so they can get away with something like a MR longer than someone who has a shorter baby, but a longer torso.

I'm kinda lucky...DS seems to be pretty 50/50 for leg and torso and he's the one I worry about the most because he's still RF at 26mo and will remain that way at least until he's 3. My DD is 5.5 yo and pretty much fits whatever seat because she's FF. BUT, she does still fit in the RXT RF and occasionally rides that way when her brother isn't in the truck with us.
