2012 car seat why are they better than the old ones?

what is up with the old car seats? what changes are they making to the car seats for the 2012 line up i keep reading that they are changing so this make me wonder what is the difference are they going to be safer than the ones that are already out or what is up with that?

It is the federal Regulations that govern car seats (from the manufacturer perspective) that have changed. The Regs changed about a year and a half ago, but the manufacturers were given until Jan 1, 2012 to comply with them, so there has been a slow phasing in of the changes with seats that we know are compliant with the Regs in every way (for some it was just changing the stickers on the seat, for others there were real changes) appearing fairly recently. Generally speaking, the old seats are also perfectly safe, as long as they haven't been recalled, are not expired, and have not been crashed.
