STARS seat positioner. HOW is this safe?

I understand the orange positioner strap is an official option on STARS seat for a bus, and that's it's crash-tested.

How tight should it be? Does it matter?

They do my daughter's (age 3) really tight, just like the harness (which it's good the harness it tight, as I requested after she came home with it loose once).

But the strap goes right under her ribs, sort up upper stomach. And it's TIGHT. It goes UNDER the harness. So in a crash, isn't it just going to jam into her (break her ribs or cause internal stomach injuries)? It would catch her before the harness, it seems.

I would never tie a strap around my kid's rib cage/stomach area. And lap belts are not safe riding high on kids. So, please tell me how this official option strap is safe. Maybe it is but I need more info! :)

The positioning strap is not attached to a structural part of the seat. It will move with the child, not hold the child back.

As Safeinthecar has said, the orange strap is a positional part of the overall design, not a primary structural feature - if that is the best way to put it.

Quite a while ago someone had similar concerns about the use of a zipper in the design of an E-Z-On Vest. The zipper does not take any crash forces as the points of restraint are at the shoulders and hips. Therefore the zipper is used to keep the vest correctly positioned on the wearer.

Although the STAR seat and E-Z-On Vest are very different, the use of the orange chest strap and the zipper as part of the complete design is the same; it helps position the restraint correctly on the occupant (or position the occupant correctly in the restraint) so the protection offered is maximised should an accident occur.

I hope that makes sense! Others here have far greater knowledge than myself about these things but that is how I understand it.
