Opinions needed on 2001Passat wagon

DH's coworker is selling his 2001 Passat GLX wagon four motion with 130k miles for $3500. We need to replace our Jeep Liberty because the gas mileage is atrocious. Wondering if any one has any experience with this vehicle. We currently have two FF Radians. Just looking for pros and cons. For what it's worth it is someone my husband trusts. Thanks so much.

Personally I wouldn't do it. My stepdad has a 2001 passat that he REALLY took care of, and he still had $500+ repair bills every other month. It was awful, and I know he doesn't have a lemon because these problems are widespread. I think at one point, the passat was deemed the least reliable vehicle on the road. :eek:

I don't own a VW so please don't take this as the gospel truth but they aren't known to be super reliable when you get in to the high mileage numbers. Certainly not like a Honda/Toyota.... DH wants a new VW badly, he thinks the new ones look cool but i refuse to consider it based upon my research.

For 4K i would probably pass :eek:
