I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but what would you do? Need to replace my 5 year old's seat (50 pounds, 47 in) .

Well, not sure but read my posting about the Cybex booster (now what?) a few posts after yours. It goes through my thought process for a situation kind of like yours with a 5-year-old. It probably depends on your seats, car, situation, etc.

Though, I don't need to replace any seats.
I guess since I can't even access my child to buckle him easily the booster wouldn't work well unless I moved the seating position of kids in the van(again). No easy task!

Is he newly-five or almost-six? Can he sit still in a booster and not mess with the belts or lean out to see better?

He just turned 5 last month. I drive a 2001 Toyota Sienna. The only other child in the van is his 2 year old brother, so room is not really a factor. I am not convinced that he could sit properly. I am concerned about the cost and also the fact that this will be used for his grandparents' car as well (2009 Rav 4).

If you are not convinced that he will sit correctly, he needs to be harnessed. Do you want some seat recommendations?

The Graco Nautilus will keep him harnessed for a while, and it converts to a (usually) good booster when you're ready for that.

At 50lbs your best options for longevity are the Graco Nautilus or the Britax Frontier85. The Nautilus will harness to 65lbs then converts to a good booster; the Frontier85 harnesses to 85lbs, has about an inch (I think) more harness height than the Nautilus, and converts to a good booster. It also comes with a higher price point... if cost is an issue I would look into a Nautilus just make sure he has some room to grow before his shoulders are even with the top harness slots :)

that's the age where I start booster training (slowly) for emergencies or a spare ride (as long as spare ride isn't more than once a week)

but otherwise, I'd keep harnessed full time until at least 6.
