Since you have your reputation turned on and can see the value (by going to your user CP), then probably what's going on is that people have left you rep, but haven't left any comments. Comments aren't required.

If you donate to car-seat.org, you can see who has left you reputation, otherwise, they have to leave a note.

I have similar question. I have been hanging out here for a while but still haven't figured out the ins and outs. After going to user cp where do you find your total rep points?

It'll be right there when you click onto your User CP. If you don't see anything, it's probably because you haven't received any. I'll "Thank" your post, and you should see a "Thanked Post" appear because "Thanks" earn reputation, too.
