Best infant seat for tiny baby

I don't want to get my hopes up, but there is a long shot I may get a 4lbs foster baby. She was born at 4lbs 13oz, but dropped to 4lbs but was still discharged as she was breathing on her own and eating well. But, something is going on and DHS has been contacted (biomom's aunt called me and told me) so I already put a call into my worker that I have a relationship w/the biomom and despite being in a different county, would take her if she went into care. That being said...I know the SS1 will swallow her whole. IF this all happens and they place her with me, what seat should I get????? I thought about the Keyfit, but where can I get one in person? Babies R Us seemed to only have them as part of a travel system, which I don't need.

What other seats would fit a tiny baby well?

One of my very good friends just had twin boys and has them both in Snugrides. The smaller one was 5 lbs and lost some before he left the hospital, so he was 4 lbs & something and he fit pretty well in his Snugride. I don't want to post a picture here since he's not mine, but I could email one to you if you PM me. I know Graco's lower weight limit is 5 lbs (right?) and I think the straps were a little above his shoulders, but they were able to tighten the straps down to fit him pretty well. I think the Keyfit would be better, but if you can't get it, then I would go with the SnugRide.

My 5lb'er fit horribly in the Snugride. She was 4lb14oz and 17" when we left the hospital. The straps were way above her shoulders and the harness could not be tightened enough to hold her securely.

I had a Latch-Loc that probably would have worked better - I think the harness went tighter than the Snugride but I'm not sure about the shoulder straps. I never did try her out in it since the seat was with my parents 250 miles away at the time.

What year was that Snugride? I'm just wondering if they would've changed it at all. I'm not saying that they got a perfect fit in the Snugride, but it's pretty good, IMO. I've asked her permission to share the picture, but I haven't heard back from her yet.

The Companion seems like it would be good for little babies, too, but I've never gotten to play around with one with an actual baby, so I really have no idea!

As much as I don't like either of these they are available with a front adjust and they adjust to fit a TINY baby: the Evenflo Embrace and the newest Cosco Eddie Bauer Designer 22. The Evenflo has almost the lowest slots of any seat, I think and the Designer comes with a complete body support. So, if push comes to shove, these two would work well for a "bitty baby"(my cousins call their doll this and I thought it was cute!).

Well at the moment, I don't need to worry about it...as baby has not been removed. DHS came out to see mom & baby and for now, is leaving things as they are.

But it's still good to know in case I ever get called for one that's too small for my SS1. Although I honestly don't think I could ever use a Evenflo or Cosco seat again! I'll have to make a trip into the city to a baby store and play with some of the infant seats to see if there is anything I'd want to keep in the back of my brain. Just have to remember to take a take measure to check harness heights!

I have a Combi Tyro II and it has very low harness straps with the infant pad in it. My son wont be born until August so I haven’t tries any babies in it yet but I have pictures. It also doesn’t have a minimum weight to it. It just goes from birth to 22 lbs.

We brought my ds home in a Baby Trend latch loc. He was 5lb 2 oz at the time, and the straps tightened down nice and snug on him. He looked very secure in it.

We brought my dd home at about 5 and a half lbs in a 5 pt graco snugride (2001 model), and she also seemed secure...but I don't recall her fitting as well in that as my ds did in the baby trend.

'04. The fit my daughter had in it was not even pretty good unfortunately. :( She didn't fit well until she was around 6.5 pounds really.
