FP stay-in-view

My son has outgrown is "stay-in-view" carseat. We had a "fender bender" about 6 months ago when he was in the seat. No one had the slightest injury --no bruises from the seatbelt, no headaches, nothing.

Someone slid (1 or 2 feet?) into us when we were going downhill on a patch of ice and cracked the outershell on the rear bumper and put a very slight dent in the rear hatch. (The impact was about equivalent to backing up into another vehicle in a parking lot at a slow speed.)

My question is:
Is this seat still safe to use? Is there anything I should look for to check for signs of wear or anything? I used it the past 6 months without even considering it might not be safe.

I don't want to sell or give away an unsafe seat...

We always recommend replacement-

Please contact Fisher Price for their recommendation.

We do usually recommend replacement to be conservative, especially if there was any damage to the vehicle or any injuries.

Of coursse, you can make your own parental choice to continue to use a seat in a minor fender bender like you describe. On the other hand, I would be reluctant to sell or give away the seat as future owners would not know the history.

Also in some states, it is a law that insurance companies replace child seats if a child was in the seat that have been involved in a crash. It various from state to state.

Re: FP stay-in-view

Here's my controversial response, LOL. My father-in-law backed into our van which had a SIV base in it. It did some damage to 2 doors and he was going relatively slowly (probably less than 5 mph).

I chose to continue to use the seat. FP has a policy of always replacing a seat if it's been in a crash, regardless of the severity of impact. I didn't want to stop using a seat I loved and found to be incredibly convenient. And I feel I could have caused the same amount of body damage by kicking the doors with my foot. I inspected the base carefully and didn't see any damage (although unseen damage can occur).

Again, this is *my* situation and what *I* chose to do. I was practically sick when I found out what happened, but don't regret my decision.

Re: FP replacing seats

Since FP no longer makes car seats, I assume this is not an option, correct?

Re: FP replacing seats

You can find replacements at some Big Lots stores for $30 (!) or on eBay.

As Heather suggested you can find some seats at big lots stores. However be careful about e-bay actions especially if the seat if from a private person. We don't know the history of the seat (was it in a crash etc....)
