The baby's most serious injury was a fracture to the side of his head with some bleeding outside the skull, Mike Wass said. X-rays showed no spinal injuries, he said.

Kyler is expected to stay in the hospital for two weeks before being able to fly home to Ottawa, Mike Wass said.

"He looks a lot better. The swelling is starting to go away," Wass said. "We've actually been able to hold him. His injuries are minor compared to what they could have been."

There was some extrication done by emergency responders on the Honda- it's possible that some of the mangle is from that. I saw the pictures the afternoon it happened (while the driver of the other vehicle was still alive, and the reports were that the child in back was like 4 years old; I'd been in chat with a friend in Santa Cruz who listens to the scanner and heard the dispatch and followed the call), as soon as they hit the local paper's website, and yeah... it sure looked unsurvivable. Lucky, lucky baby.... and very, very unlucky baby, losing his mama. :(
