What's with this mentality?

Here in Australia, it has only very recently become more car seat safety conscious. The word is not terribly well spread, and most people I know or talk to have NO idea about car seat safety.

Up until very recently, only children under 12 months had to be in ANY sort of restraint. A 12 month old baby could legally sit on just the seat with adult belt. This is still the law in the northern territory if Australia.

So I can understand why alot of people dont "know" the recommendations. But what about those that DO know? What's their excuse? I'm part of another online forum, and a lady just came in to ask about a 3 across TR back situation, as she has just turned her 7mo FF. I told her her 7mo was too little to be FF, and gave her some great recommendations for Australian seats that would allow her to keep her child rear facing. Her response? She loves it forward facing and I'm not in the mood to argue.

So, people know the facts, and choose to ignore them. Same goes for alot if people I know with their 2yos in boosters, and 4-5yos without any restraints at all.

Do they think an accident will never happen to them? Do they just not care about their kids? Im sure they do, but I'm jus struggling to understand how they can not care about their safety in the car?! What is it??

yeah what she said also some people say they dont want their child's legs broken (talking more older children) broken if they are a in carcrash while rear facing..um hello broken legs are a lot easier to fix than a broken neck !!!

if it's anything like the states, it generally takes, IME, about 10 years for each new safety recommendation to hit the mainstream. when my son was born in '95, the news was just coming out to keep kids rearfacing to 1 year minimum. Nowadays, it is common place(some still choose to ignore it, but it's getting better) So it will get better, it just takes awhile.
