Sort of related: Air bag replacements??

I just noticed our "new" to us 01V70 has manufacturing/installation stickers on the inside of the passenger doors for the airbag system. We have front, side and curtain airbags. What's alarming is they are all checked April 2010, and it says this is the date they highly recommend inspection of the airbag system.

This may be a stupid question, but how can one possibly "check" these? The only way for the dealer to know if they are still working is to deploy it I would think. And I can only imagine how $$ replacing them all would be, and I'm sure the mechanics will laugh and see dollar signs if I call and schedule an appointment for them to check out the airbags in the car. So I'm wondering if this is standard for all vehicle manufacturers, if it's being overly cautious, or if anyone has any experience with this type of situation?

Our (1997) Subaru says somewhere - either on the car itself or maybe in the owner's manual - that the airbags should be inspected 10 years after their manufacture. I think it is fairly standard. I think that, after we bought it (used when it was 10 years old), we took it to a subaru dealership and asked them to do the airbag inspection. I don't know what they did exactly, but they told us that the airbags were fine.

This could be important. A friend of mine up in Washington's child got into an accident 5/5/2007 in a car they bought used and the airbags never deployed. She's still at home in a coma.

Inspecting the airbags would consist of visually checking electrical components for corrosion, checking for recalls, and making sure the airbag light on the instrument cluster is doing what it is supposed to do (in my car it is supposed to blink for 10 seconds when you start the engine, then go out).

I would do it myself and save the money.
