Best car seat for an 8 month old (8.5kg) that meets Australian standards??

Please help !

I currently have my son in Maxi Cosi Carbio fix - Isofix but stupid Australian rules don't allow isofix or MC. I am moving back to Australia from the middle east and need to know which is the best - ie which one can stay rear facing for the longest.

I appreciate all suggestions as I don't want to buy anything which is substandard.

Cheers
Marisa

Also! How do I find out if a seat is Aussie approved?

My daughter is in the Safety 1st Uptown ( bought here in the middle east ). How do I find out if this seat meets the Aussie standards (as we are repatriating). If it is approved, I could put my son into the Uptown and buy a new booster for my daughter.

Thanks again - this is all so confusing !

Hi, I moved and merged both of your posts from the more U.S. centric Carseat section into a single thread in our Canadian and International section so you can get more Aussie specific replies. :)

The only seats legal in Australia are Australian seats. I have used the Safe and Sound Meridian AHR, the trouble with Australian seats is that they only rear face to 12kg (about 15 months ish) :(

Thanks for your reply.

The trouble I am finding is that when looking at different car seats on the net (for sale) it rarely lists the weight guidelines for rf.

Is your Britax an Aussie/NZ approved seat?

I'll let Finn answer the questions about particular seats, but I just wanted to clarify that New Zealand and Australia have very different standards when it comes to seats. New Zealand even allows some seats imported for other countries. As Finn said, in Australia only Australian seats are legal so you would have to buy new seats there that are certified for use in Australia.

The problem is, as Finn said, they are not into extended rear facing and even allow forward facing starting at 6 months, I believe, so some parents chose to import ERF seats illegally.

Only Australian seats may be used legally in Australia. The maximum RF limit on any Australian seat is 12kg, and maximum FF limit is 18kg.

If you wish to comply with the Australian requirements, I suggest you go to http://www.britax.com.au/ and have a look. Safe n Sound is the Australian arm of Britax. These are well reputed seats, and really their only problem is that they have such low weight limits, as required by the Australian standard.

The various seats that Finn and I use (in New Zealand) are not legal in Australia. Indeed, in my case, some of mine aren't legal in NZ either

There are a number of people in Australia (like New Zealand) who will elect to use a non-compliant seat, particularly if they have large children, or want to rear-face beyond a year of age. My son was only 2yrs 2 months when he outgrew the tallest harnessed Australian seat, by height and weight. But in fairness he was a bit of a monster!

Lol I'm all legal at the moment, I am however taking my Radian xtsl to use rf when we visit Australia in September

I am in Australia and the seat limitations here are pretty crappy. I would just bring your seat with you and use it if you are comfortable with that. I use a RF Radian XTSL for my 2.5yr old son.

Just a quick note to anyone who is in Australia and is thinking of using a Radian XTSL, (on the understanding it is not legal), I have just noticed that there is a NZ baby goods supplier who ships to Australia. www.bumbles.co.nz

I have no connection at all with this company (other than I bought a seat through them), so I hope on that basis it's OK for me to post the web address. :D
