Trying to decide on future seats...

Stats:
DS1 - 4.5 y/o, 37 ish lbs, 13.5" torso (he's a runt but due for a growth spurt I think)
DS2 - 1y 4m, 24 lbs,

Current set up is Ody (2010) with:
DS1 in a RNXT FF, 2nd to top slot
DS2 in a MA RF (expires Sept 2011), 3rd harness slot is just *at* shoulders

Spare Scenera fits both kids currently.

Plan to keep DS2 RF as long as possible and he will get DS1's XT at 30 lbs or by next Sept.

Do I go for another harnessed or combination seat for DS1 or *gasp* start looking at boosters for training? He needs to remain harnessed in the Ody as he still sleeps in the van but for the 2nd vehicle we can use cheaper/travel seats as it will rarely be used unless we use it for travelling.

ATM we travel (flying) a fair bit with the XT and Scenera. Once he moves to a booster full time, we will buy 2 so we can have one kept at the grandparent's home.

Oh another snag, GP van has lowback seats and no headrests so support is fundamental.

WWYD? Who gets new seats? Help me decide :)

I agree with your assessment that DS2 should get the XT when he outgrows the MA. (if you know if goes in RFing in your vehicle)

He should fit in the spare scenera for a long while as a second seat (at least until 25lbs)

As for DS 1 - he may take a while to acquire that extra 3 lbs. Maybe a year or more before he is solidly 40lbs.

For now, use the marathon until it expires or he outgrows the harness height. I believe it has an inch and a half higher THS over the scenera. When the MA expires you can reassess and see if he could use a Turbo booster or if he is still under 40lbs maybe a maestro.

For the future, you might as well get him a true harness to booster seat so that you don't have to buy anything else once you can safely booster him. I would say that the only thing you really need is a nice Graco Nautilus or a Frontier. I know you don't need the harness weight or height, but it would be nice to have it convert to a nice high booster (especially cause you need the head support)

I think the Frontier is coming out with a cowmoo... I know you will miss that cover on the MA ;)

I saw that in the other thread and that's what got me thinking. Yes I will miss it but if I can find the cowmoo love another way...

You brought another thought to my attention that I hadn't really addressed which was if DS2 hits 30 lbs and DS1 has grown too tall for the harness on the MA FF for the flip prior to it's expiry, I'll have to think about which seats to buy at that point. Ahhhh random thoughts. Really, I know the seats I prefer and just need to shop when the time nears.

Yes the XT fits both vehicles RF so no worries there.
