What to do with expiring infant seat?

I have a Graco SR (a 20 lb. seat) that I just realized is outgrown. I weighed my 10 m/o DD3 this morning with a full diaper because I figured she was getting close to 20 lb., and the scale said 20.0 lb. [I do have a convertible seat ready for her, and she will never ride in the SR again.] I was so hoping that she'd have a little more time in it since she isn't even 12 months yet and still has about two inches of hard shell above her head.

On to my real question...the seat expires in December of this year. I don't know if it's worth it to even keep it until then since it fits none of my children and it's only good for another six months. Not even long enough to have another baby. Whether I decide to dispose of it now or in six months, HOW do I do it? I figure I can keep the cover and the straps, since the straps are new within the year (got 'em a few weeks before DD3 was born), but what to do with the shell and base?

Some areas have car seat recycling, I'd contact safekids and see if your local chapter or one nearby does.

If not, remove the straps and cover from the seat and dispose of seperately. If you can, smash up the shell and write "do not use" all over it in sharpie.

If you can't find somewhere to recycle it, and you decide that you don't want to destroy it, I just thought I'd suggest a few other ideas. My old Snugride expires in December, too. I'm just keeping it around the house. I used it as a car seat for my 5 year old, but then I bought a different seat for my 2.5 year old. It was nice to have it in the house as a place to secure my son on occasion when he was a baby, and now my kids use it when playing with dolls and stuff. I've heard of people storing them in the trunk of their cars to occasionally use the infant seat inside a restaurant or something for babies who are riding in convertibles in the car.

You could also save it for the next time that Babies R Us runs their program where people exchange old seats for coupons on new products.

I've only ever seen them do the trade in once, but that could be because I wasn't getting their coupons and stuff until recently.
