broken collar bone, Have to redo car seat

My son is 23 months old, weights about 24 lbs and is still in 18 month size clothes. He broke his collar bone last night and I need to redo his car seat so as not to cause him and pain. I really need advice on how to do this, His seat does not do the RF but his twin sister's does, We can switch them out thats not a problem other than sister hates my sons seat. But is it safe to use a towel or something to pad the strap, He is in a butterfly brace as well.

The same thing happened to my dd when she was 18 months. Fortunately, she only had to wear the butterfly for 10 days, and it didn't interfere with proper harnessing. I would definitely put him in the rearfacing seat (as long as he fits safely, weight below the limit and head no closer than one inch to the top of the seat). I think I may have left the harness a little bit looser than normal on her shoulders, rather than padding things, but still snug enough so that she was not at risk of ejection in a crash, just not as super snug as I usually did them.

You the age and size of your children, they would both be a lot safer rear facing. My 3 year old is 30 lbs and still rear facing, and will be for quite some time still. Here is some info on why we encourage extended rear facing- it really is THAT much safer!
